Payments are changing – and along with them, the obligations of businesses.
From December 1st, all businesses carrying out retail transactions with individuals (B2C) are required to accept payments via IRIS Payments.
This is not simply a new payment option, but a mandatory requirement for full connection with the Greek Tax Authority (AADE).
👉 IRIS on the POS Does NOT Automatically Mean Compliance
Here lies the biggest misconception.
Many professionals believe that since their POS terminal accepts IRIS payments, they are fully compliant.
Unfortunately, this is not the case.
For your business to be truly compliant, the following are required:
✔ Upgrade of the cash register
✔ Technical connection with the IRIS system
✔ Installation of a special “key/driver” by your authorized technician
✔ And – most importantly ➡ the payment method must clearly appear as IRIS in the AADE e-send system
If this does not happen, then technically your business does not meet the new legal requirements.
👉 What Does This Mean in Practice?
Every time a customer pays via IRIS:
- a receipt must be issued normally from the cash register,
- the transaction must be properly recorded,
- and it must be automatically transmitted to AADE with a clear IRIS payment indication.
In simple terms:
👉 Payment via IRIS = Mandatory recording by the cash register
Anything less than that may expose your business to issues in a future tax audit.
👉 What You Need to Do NOW
A simple but crucial step:
📞 Contact your cash register technician immediately and make sure that:
- the necessary upgrade has been completed,
- the IRIS functionality has been properly activated,
- and the IRIS payment indication appears correctly in the e-send system.
If this process has not been completed, your business remains exposed.
